Changes
-Added Wind spirit (only H is her raping male enemies)

Stopping development for now.

Long story short, Lufuclad is a game which should be very enjoyable to make, but the current method of developing it makes it a bad experience to play, and very stressful to work on.

The problem is that with only two days per week, I don't have enough time to fully implement most of the features that I work on each update. As a result, things are left unfixed and future updates are built on a broken system, which makes development  time consuming and frustrating. The stop-and-go nature also breaks the flow of development, wherein I sometimes have to wait 2 weeks before I get to go back and fix something (at which point I'm less familiar with the problem and code).

The notion of setting arbitrary deadlines for myself is also horrible while I'm still building the core of the game. A bug doesn't care how much time I have to work on it, or if I lose 5 hours from insomnia. It's done when it's done, and rushing to fix it just creates more problems, while releasing the game before it is fixed is little more than an EXE that shows you an error message.

Full-time game after a future release,
So, I will be working on the game again once Noaika (and probably another project) are released.
I like Lufuclad, and the concept of it, and I want to enjoy making it. I don't want people to play a broken, incomplete game.

Once I begin working on it again, I will work on it full time, completing the underlying systems and overall gameplay loop behind closed doors. After that is done, I will continue working on it full time while releasing new content as it is finished, whenever it is finished. After a certain amount of the content is finished, I'll finish the rest behind closed doors, as a full game. So that even for those who have played it before, it can be played as a new, complete experience. I think ongoing projects are doomed to be worse for it, to all but those who have never played it.

Anyhow, that's all for now. I will be deciding over the course of the next week what I will be working on instead of Lufuclad in my free time, but it will not be anything with a similar format, or deadlines.

  1. Have you considered making it open source and/or getting some help developing it?
It would be a pleasure to help with the code part.

  2. Well, seems like the idea of you actually communicating with us and making progress on a at least somewhat regular basis was too good to last after all.

Actually are you even still working on Noaika? It's been what, 5 Years since you started and we heard almost nothing about it since then.

    1. Noaika is still in development.

There will be other content to fill the gap left by lufu. I will also open up about main projects more once demos are released. Since then there will be active response to feedback.

    2. These things can sometimes take years to complete. I'd rather see someone creating such a dedicated project sustaining themselves rather than disregard their health for a project. Some of the best games in the past have stemmed from passion projects, so either way, you should be excited to see what Kyrieru pushes out next, even if it is in a year or two.

  3. Been following since around v15. This would have been a game I would have financially supported if it had a full time development schedule, either through patreon or with a purchase on release.

It's your choice ultimately, but I think the better choice would be to work on this game more without the mindset that it is a side project. Seems like such a waste in both assets and the community otherwise.

    2. Two games down the road is a very long time. I've never seen a project restart over that length of time due to other commitments or problems taking priority.

I hope to be proven wrong, because I like this game and your work.

    3. I find that the issue tends to be outdated graphics and bad code when returning to past projects. However in my case I think there was a cutoff point around 2014 where my pixel art skills plateaued, and the changes from then on are less noticeable.

As for code, I will have to redo things regardless of whether it's now or later, given that some updates required patchwork. The challenge was figuring out how to do certain things, moreso than programming them. I wouldn't have to redo most of it though.

  4. Disappointing but understandable. Development is not at all easy for a big project, and many parts are more work than fun. It's also probably not easy to come back here every week and give updates on a free product and have people spit error messages back at you.

I like Lufuclad as well, it showed a lot of promise as an adventure/survival experience for what it turned out to be so far, so I'm especially sad to hear the news, but maybe being behind closed doors is best for it.

Still it was very cool to see its primal stages documented like this, and I enjoyed the ride for the little bit I followed. I sincerely hope this isn't the last of what we see of the game, and I wish you the best of luck in finding your way here again.

    1. I will probably still give updates once I'm working on it again, there just won't be demo releases until it's at the stage where content is being added. The first demo would basically pick up where this version left off, but with all the gameplay elements implemented.

  5. I think for you to come out and say this is pretty bold. I actually really liked where Noaika was going, so hearing that you're returning to that is good news to me.
Still, you clearly show you care a lot for your games. I'm glad instead of just running off with the format and ending up with something you feel is rather lame, you say you're not satisfied and are willing to potentially disappoint people to ensure it's good on your terms. Compared to many other devs which just get lazy until they're forgotten, you're far ahead of the curve.
Looking forward to what comes next.

    1. Ah, well I was never working on Lufuclad instead of other projects. Lufu was always on the side, which to me is the issue. It's more complicated than my other games to program, so it doesn't really work as a casual project with frequent updates.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Well, it wasn't planned to be in development hell, just a side game with no specific ending (something like minecraft, before the "end" was added) that had content added over time.

Now the plan is that I will work on it as a full game, with a specific end-point, and it will be sold as a normal game once it is done. There may also be a demo mid-development that picks up where this version left off, except with all the gameplay elements finished.

  8. A heartbreaking, but understandable outcome. I was really in love with Lufuclad, especially the concept of a sprite-based, sandbox-style H-game. I've played precious few sandbox h-games, but this one really took the concept in a direction I liked.
It can't be helped, though. It's a complex game, and probably couldn't have thrived as a side-project. I look forward to when you pick it back up one day. In the mean time, best of luck with Noaika ^.^b

Did it because they only have an animation for raping enemies, so I needed to make it so it was easy to see that.

  11. It's a classic case of small project that grows too big into it's own thing, but reading the other comments makes me a bit concerned. The overall flow was working for an "on-going" game like you defined it, but for one more classic with an end-point I don't really know...The whole appeal of the relationship system and ressource management is to see how things evolve over time with AIs shenanigans.

As for developpment hell, there were red flags for a couple of updates but considering how any offer to discuss the matter turned because of a certain type of anon commenters such hiatus was bound to happen. Or was it?

The first thing to do is to clear a misunderstanding: Update =/= Demo.
You can totally post an update about what you are working on, some preview sprites, then a demo only when the current mechanic that's worked on is finished. The game would be more stable, and you wouldn't have to back and forth between animation hell and coding hell while lefting things unfinished.

I know it's frustrating and people always demand new content (especially H-content, I seen some question why there's even gameplay at one point which is absurd...) but trying to please everyone isn't usually a successful strategy. Focus on what thing at a time, and things will be less erratic.

As for deadlines, the weekly update would just become a time to engage on various dev subjects and discussions between progress updates. A moment to exchange with the community rather than some sort of "exam to comply with delivery" like some seems to think such posts are...

There's only a few things more stressful than having people always demand stuff like if you somehow owed them something. Some mild burnout was inevitable with the current mindset around the project. Sure, the "stop and go" nature of your dev cycle still is an issue, but cleaning the overall expectations and interaction environment would already alleviate some of the devloppement burden.

Take a break of posting demos if you need to fix things, it's totally fine. With more mod tools we could have helped a bit more entertaining the audience during downtime but the current state is too basic to work.

It was fun trying to mod the game for the short time it lasted. So here's a parting gift, in hopes the project get revived sooner than later.

    3. Yeah, i really didn't mind when Kyrieru couldn't post an update in a week. I actually just enjoyed reading the posts and getting excited for what was going to come, didn't care if it was next week or next month actually.

I never really cared much about the H stuff in Lufu, for me in doesn't fit well in the state the game is/was, maybe adding that later would've been better since it's pretty useless rn. I know is an Hgame an all that but, if i could, I would change all the H stuff for enemy behavior development and player stats/states. Having a preview of the game where the mechanics are polished and functional would make me way more excited than waiting one week to fuck an enemy imo.

But even then, i really need to thank Kyrieru for making this amazing game. Lufu pretty game to look at, in terms of art, colouring and animation. Even if he did make some wrong decisions through it, all were understandable.

So for me, i don't really mind if he needs to take all the time in the world to come back to the game and finish it. If it is for the sake of the developer and the game I'll wait what i need to. After all i already know how much effort he does put in games and none of them ever let me down. So i wish the best for him and his future projects!

    4. Well, some comments were annoying, but it was mostly frustrating spending a day doing an annoying programming task, all the while thinking "this is going to consume half my time for this update".

For example the fairy has a whole other attack animation, and another H animation, but I literally didn't have time to add them, and even one extra day would have given me that time, and the ability to polish things more. This wouldn't be as much of an issue in a project with a simpler concept, but Lufuclad is very prone to things breaking when I'm still implementing stuff at the same time/fixing previous bugs.

      Delete
    5. That's exactly why a shift in perspective about the posts/updates would already be effective. If a demo isn't weekly but "when current task is done" it isn't a stressful race against time all the time. The weekly blog posts become more of an opportunity to talk about what you like so people understand your vision about the project

Keeping yourself challenged trying to keep at least one demo a month gives you around 8 days worth of work sessions to finish a task instead of 2. (per demo/task, the monthly schedule itself is of same size) If something is finished early, it's cool, if not...well, it tends to happen.

Since it's all behind the scenes you're free to allocate more days in a row to avoid "stop and return" to coding. Things like "1 week on Lufu, and rest of the month on other games" or "4 days this week and next week then nothing for Lufu the rest of the month" become possible. A more flexible way to work depending on your needs rather than arbitrary expectations would make things less stressful.

But when it comes to tedious tasks themselves....Unfortunately there's no magic recipe. You know by now that they're inevitable in this line of work, both in coding and in animation.
Also, the frame count for some characters are madlad territory when putting in perspective they're still in early state. No wonder why you don't have time to finish coding after you had to draw all of those poses. It's even surprizing how much you can deliver in only two days of work, even if it isn't much visible when playing.

  15. Your decision is understandable. It’s a shame, but let’s see the positive points. You tried and turns out this way of developing a game on the side doesn’t work well with your workflow (especially since, I feel, it became something bigger than originally planned again :P). So not everything is lost in the process, you learned something from the experience. « We don’t make mistakes, we just have happy accidents! » ;)

Now about Noaika. Well I hope you managed to make some progress on it. Far from me to put pressure on you or anything, I’m just saying that I genuinely hope everything has gone smoothly for the most part so far. Motivation can be a bitch sometime and the longer a project last, the harder it can became to finish it (at least from my experience). The best I can say is good luck and keep up the good work.

However, may I suggest you something? Since it been a while we had any news about Noaika, maybe you could replace Lufuclad updates with some informations about it? Maybe some teasers about the new sprites or the levels (without showing too much of course). Or maybe a bit of lore about it the game? You know, a little something time to time to keep us in the loop.

By the way, I was wondering, any plan for a Steam release of Noaika? Since Eroico and Aster are on Steam, that would be nice to release Noaika on it as well. :)

  22. As long as you're still contributing to the H scene, all is good brotha. I think about how little talent (in terms of quantity, for this level of quality) that we in the H scene have and it's pretty scary.

Take a dude like Grimhelm for instance, if that dude is gone we lose out on a MAJOR player that contributes borderline AAA side scrollers who literally would not be able to be replaced for years to come. Even a dude like S-Purple, as much as people don't like that guy for what happened with Breeding Season, losing him would mean losing BIG talent regarding this niche scene.

You're still doing us all a MASSIVE service by still making great works man, and Noaika is going to be a BANGIN' game. Keep it up homie!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. You know that all the animations in Cloud meadow are commissioned, right? If S-purple leaves the scene, anyone smart enough to have noted who was commissioned can hire them to get the same animation quality. But as designs goes, yeah, the new dev would be expected to create interesting ones for them to be worth it once animated.

  23. First of all, good job so far. Hats off to your wonderful efforts.
IMO, Lufuclad halted because you tried some RPG stuff on H game. That's something you can never do alone. I think you'd better focus on H and H only. Nobody plays your game expecting Terraria. Maybe actions, but definitely not RPG thingy.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. It's not a question of working on it alone, and there's people who are interested in Lufuclad for it's different approach. For its potential of becoming more than a glorified H-gallery you can just search the gifs on R34.

The problem was that now a full task is set for a weekly deadline. And since they work on it only 2 days a week, that means making a full character (animations + coding) or a full mechanic in two days...Every week.

That's just not realistic as deadlines goes, especially when will come the more complexe RPG mechanics. They need more time to develop and everyone knows that. And yet people are super negative when the dev miss these absurd deadlines.

This project mainly need a change in perspective on its workflow, no matter the nature of the game itself.

  24. does this mean lufuclad will be released once your finished with it? because lufuclad sounds like it would benefit more from a minecraft approach, slowly adding to it every so often as a side project. not once a week like now but whenever a sizeable update is complete.

    Replies
    1. Sort of. My plan is to work on it until all the gameplay works and there is a small amount of base content. Then It will be a sort of public demo, and I will slowly add content to it as I work on it full time. Then once a certain amount is there, I will add the rest of the content behind the scenes, and sell the game when it is finished.

Then there might be occasional updates, but I would move on to the next main game.

  25. It seems every voice here is nothing but blind admiration and approval.

You've been working on Noiaka for half a decade, and consistently halt all production to chase after half-baked side projects despite having taken pre-orders for the former.

You are in desperate need of deadlines, or a Producer.

When someone ELSE forces you to actually complete a project, it's always a gem (Aster, for example.) but when left to your own devices it's a miracle anything gets done. You need to buckle down, because you have a lot of creative energy and good game sense. H-aside, you make interesting games. It would be nice if they actually came out.

Even when you get 'bored' of working on Noika, this time? Keep working on it anyway. Until it's done.

    1. Er...What? Nobody has ever forced me to make any project. Kurovadis and Eroico were both made by myself in 3-4 months. Aster also had like a 1-2 year gap where it was put aside and picked up later so I'm not sure why it's the example.

Anyhow, if you can find a producer that can cure people of health conditions, let me know.

    2. You have to admit it's kind of suspicious how there hasn't been a single peep out of Noaika in literal years, despite your assurances that it takes up the bulk of your time and despite how frequently you used to put out status updates for it. What is it about Noaika that requires this radio silence? I remember you once mentioned that you don't want to put out too many updates because you don't want to oversell it, but by this point there's literally nothing to sell.

People enjoy these Lufuclad updates despite them being half-broken because they're proof you're working on it, and now this proof is getting discontinued for the same vague assurances of work. Can you provide any proof that you're working on Noaika at all? A gif, or a screenshot, like you used to post? People have literally already paid for the game. We need a show of good faith.

      Delete
    3. The bulk of my time was not always spent on Noaika. As mentioned on my main blog I worked on another game once GM2 came out so that I could get used to it before porting Noaika over. The goal for a while has been to release the smaller game first, and then go back to Noaika 100% after, (Using some of the resulting profits to pay for more music, and some other stuff)

The problem is that what seem like short projects get thrown for a loop due to health reasons. It's not uncommon for me to basically just lose 5 hours out of a day and feel like crap for the rest of it, so it doesn't exactly make it easy to sit down and work like I want to. This also causes projects to go on for longer, which creates uncertainty, because every game starts to feel like it isn't good enough.

  27. Personally i think it could work as a side project you only occasionally work on, but instead of working towards a playable demo every week, you just tell us the latest updates and features, whats added, whats removed, whats changed, that sorta thing, all without having to worry about the stability of the builds, (Perhaps a new demo only once a month?).
It could work as a sort of filler to keep people interested and invested as you work on your main games behind the scenes during the week. Allowing you to keep the main games content a surprise without having to go dark.

The idea of you going dark again is not a promising sight...
Besides, its fun to watch a game grow like this, hearing the developers ideas and plans.

    1. At this point, why don't you just visit R34..?

    2. The reason I didn't add a gallery mode to Lufu is because I wanted to build up to a state where playing it normally is enough to experience H as much as you want.

The problem with this format is that if you add a gallery, the user would just log in each update, look at the animation in the viewer, and then close the game. I think the game should be well done enough that the user can experience things in the gameplay.

      Delete
    3. I agree with this wholeheartedly. A lot of my favourite H games I much prefer to play a level or the game itself rather than opening the gallery for it. If there's no context towards how I got the H content then I feel it's a little pointless to play the game in the first place. Play the game enough and its content becomes easy enough to access in which there's no point in a gallery.

I hope that this reaches you to give you a bit of energy. I have much the same problem with finishing projects and personally am much worse at it ( I have like 4 ideas, and 3 "started projects", but nothing past that ). I am personally trying to find a way to complete one game so that I can get something done.

I say all of this to point out that the negativity stating "you never finish" is bull. The fact that you have 3 finished, and really polished games is amazing to me. I hope you get better soon.

I would recommend looking to find someone who can do the "tedious" work for you. So if you have part of a project that you hate doing ( be it art, programming, music, etc... ) find someone who shares this passion, and see if they can pick up some of that so that you are able to continue with what gives you energy and fuels your passion.

    1. Health is the main problem for me because it slows down the pace of development. The slower development is, the more likely I am to get "bored" of gameplay, and feel as though it is flawed, or lacks something.

The other damaging effect of time is that you get used to how the game is, and it becomes difficult to imagine it as something else. There's a sense that it must be fixed with what is there, which can make it feel like a puzzle with no solution.

  37. This may be a silly question but I have been following Lufuclad since v12 and honestly I didn't know you made other games. Would you be able to link me to where I could be updated with your projects you will be working on?

  38. One step at a time! I have the same exact problem my man. So many ideas, so little time, more stress on the plate that it overflows and I have to mop it up off the ground. It's weird sharing this but whenever I play Stardew Valley it stresses me out to think that there is so many things to do with limited energy and time. The game is supposed to make you relax, not stress you out!! Haha. Hope reading my silly experience makes you determined a little.

  40. I'd just like to use this opportunity to say I came back to this blog after not checking it for a good while (since a few posts ago).
I'd been kind of hoping you did this from the start but honestly, the bi-weekly updates were way too generous as it was. If you've recognised that you need to slow it down then so be it!

Honestly, if you cut back to just simply sharing a post with us once a month I'd be happy. Not even an updated build each month; literally just a health check on how you're doing and maybe what your current thought process is on whatever you've been working on, sketch, animation or otherwise.

Anyway, legit take care of yourself, I want you to recognise that you've provided far more than most developers do already. Quality over quantity I say (though I argue you've been providing both) and please prioritise whatever becomes the most mentally and physically stable process of developing these titles. Take a good break if you need to for a while. Mentally recharge and we'll hope to see you again soon after you're happy.

    1. You can trigger it by using Left Shift near a downed enemy, but please note that it only works on some enemies (namely the squid and the slug). There's 2 types of animations for each and pretty sure you can trigger them by holding up or down before pressing left shift.

  44. So, 2022?2023? Well, Lufu was too good to last, its a pity really, but a man gota do what a man gotta do, if you feel you need to sort other things before comiting to Lufuclad you are probably right.
Never made any games, nor have the knowledge to really say anything but couldnt you let other people help you? I mean, Fallout 4 is a shitty, broken, bugged and ugly game without all those mods made by the comunity to hold it in place and make it more enjoyable and beautiful. You sure there is no out there willing to give a helping hand? Anyway I suport your decision, heartbroken as i am.

  49. Finally, he learned his lesson to not be under-disciplined... If you give deadlines, YOU FOLLOW the deadlines, you can delay or postpone it just a few times, not every single week.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Are you serious? A week-end worth of work per update was bound to be too strict of a deadline. Past a certain point, game mechanics would need more time to be programmed and some ennemies may require extra work compared to others.
Impossible deadlines and comments like yours, trying to make the dev pass off as incompetent while having the high ground, is exactly what made developpement stop.

Yes, Kyrieru should have revised the workflow in a way that gave them more space to breath so every update could be delivered in time once a month but the problem wasn't discipline this time, just a viscious circle of poor planning to keep up with the audience's expectations.

  52. Hey Ky! Hope everything's going alright!

I have a question about the game once you get the point of picking up again where you left off. Are there gonna be ways to have sex with entities in the game consensually, or is combat going to be the only option? Not that it's an issue, I just thought the idea would be interesting.

Hope motivation and good health finds you well!

    1. You can already have consensual sex, technically. I think if you press H, you place yourself on the ground, and the first enemy to reach you who is also targeting you, will fuck you in one of their dominant positions. Not sure if that's what you had in mind, but it's what we have, for now. Only thing is that once you're happy, you still gotta "struggle" out of it afterwards instead of them releasing you.

Of the enemies we currently have, I believe this works for Slugs, Goblins, and Catgirls. The Squid might have to still land on you in order to fuck you, meanwhile, since them landing directly on top of you if you're not blocking, immediately gets them to fuck you. I think placing yourself on the floor also works for the Ghost, but since getting caught by a Ghost is basically game over, I dunno if you wanna tempt them like that.

  53. Would be nice if development kept going it has so much potential but at least get some other people to help with the game if this degrades you're health. Also; you should set-up a discord for this project too at least be able to communicate more efficiently.

  56. In version 38 there are errors when using the other skills of the character, if I hit a log several times and pick it up, the game closes for me, in the map change there are areas that cannot be explored well, apart from the lack of activities, I like the game and its progress but those errors solved would be great, my congratulations for such an excellent game and I look forward to version 39 and 40

    1. GameMaker Studio is what Kyrieru use for their games.

There are a few mod tools but nobody reverse-engineered or ported the game to an open project yet, by respect for the dev. Sprite sheets have been exported to help splicing poses, but that's it.

  68. WOW this game is AMAZING! the style and animation and unique idea of it, can make it better than "Don't Starve". The capacity of pussy and idea of collecting sperm XD it is so COOL. If you can make that sperm as main ingredient to produce something or a fuel for some mashine :D that would put this game on top of all hentai games i saw. i would play it for days like "Don't Starve". I noticed that licking pussy is making capacity go on minus XD nice idea to increase the capacity before gathering more sperm. Sorry but kising part is kind of week and not sure what that flying chicks are for. But in overal big thumbs UP!!! you need a company that will help you evolve that idea, you have made GREAT work till now.
